There is so much teaching about the importance of being present here and now. And yet, we continually need to restate this importance and redirect our minds to focus on here and now. It is the nature of our minds – ironically necessary for our interaction with the physical world – to keep getting distracted in abstract concepts and imaginings, away from the attention to the physical world around us and the state of our physical bodies.

It is not new information that the present moment is our place of power, the place where all resources are available, the place where we can change the future and the past and all of life around us. It is not our power and resources that get away from us, it is we who are not present in the moment with them. We start to worry or imagine what could go wrong, which takes us out of the present moment, and away from the resources we could use to solve our problems, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Mind, in its attempt to justify itself, tells us all of this imagining is necessary; we get worked up emotionally about these possible outcomes and the past events our imaginings are based on, separating ourselves even more from the present moment and all of its available resources. This vicious cycle becomes a real addiction, sometimes leading to other addictions and escapism.

One of the basic teachings in Alcoholics Anonymous is to remember that right now, in this present moment, you are not in danger and have everything you need – our worries and concerns generally are about losing that at some point in the future, or offense at a painful experience from our past. We go through times of trial and pain, but the best way to overcome those situations are by being present with what we are actually dealing with, and accessing the resources that can help us overcome, rather than dwelling on possible undesired outcomes, creating them by directing our energy there, and blocking receptivity to insight and revelation. Failing to be present in an emergency situation can lead to the worst possible outcome. If we practice being present in our regular daily lives, then we will be able to discern what is a real emergency and access the wisdom to act appropriately when that unexpected emergency situation arises.

We are so used to dividing our lives – either we are in silent meditation or we are lost in the chattering of our minds. The goal is to blend the two – just like all opposites, they must merge. It is when we learn to live our lives from that place of silent meditation where we feel our inner guidance, that we really start to live. The mind, when separated from the inner, non-cognitive levels of life, creates tension, further blocking receptivity to information from those levels. It is when we allow the mind to relax into slower brainwaves that the connection becomes active. Our Musical Power Sigil, The Present Moment, is alchemically designed to awaken our inner senses as we interact with life around us.

Practical Recommendations:

For practicing with this Sigil, it is not necessary to isolate yourself or create a separate ceremonial space. Find something to be present with while listening to the music. It does not have to be just one thing for the duration of the music, you can shift your focus between objects, or, for instance, just sit and feel the energy of your kitchen. You may choose any physical object, animal or insect, or even another person. However, we do not recommend having competing sounds – other music playing, podcasts, conversations. You may choose to do this outside on a walk. If you interact with written text, we recommend keeping it in soft focus. You may, for instance, have a newspaper handy, to glance over the headlines, allowing the music to keep you present. If you start actively reading words, your inner voice/dialogue turns on and blocks incoming sound, making the alchemy less effective. If you decide to be present with a printed text, focus not on the words and reading through it, but skimming it with light focus, making sure to keep the music and your inner state at the forefront – focusing on how the information/words make you feel and the non-cognitive information you are able to receive by contemplating them. If you desire, you may also use visual Power Sigils and Wheels as objects to be present with, interacting with them and receiving non-cognitive information. Remember to tune in to your physical body as well, regardless of what you are being present with. If you desire, you may choose to just be present with your body, and listen to any messages it may be relaying to you. This is particularly helpful if you have any sort of disease or physical discomfort. We recommend doing this on a regular, perhaps daily, basis, until it becomes your way of being.
